If there’s one exhibition equally heartfelt as it is educational, it’s “We are Family” curated by Sydney photographer/curator C. Moore Hardy. It was kicked off on the first of March and runs until the 18th May at The Australian Centre for Photography so there is plenty of time to squeeze it into your hectic rock star schedule – no excuses!
The exhibition, as part of Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, celebrates diversity and difference. The artists are responding to the phrase We Are Family to express their ideas of what is “family”. Some of the works are highly personal and intimate representations of their families while other works highlight ideas about the concept of family.
Finally there is representation of families within the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersexual (GLBTQI) communities and the works explore a new sociology and share new understandings to ultimately redefine what makes a “family”.
Most impressive of all, is the educational factor, or should I say, the aims of the exhibition. An accessible educational kit was developed to accompany the exhibition for Year 9 – 12 High School Students. It supports the students to constructively discuss and explore the contemporary definition of “family”. It is clever in the way that it prompts the students to answer questions of similarity in diverse families, not just difference, and explains the works and intentions of the artists.
If I had kids – I’m sure I’d be up at the school right now making sure they organised an excursion tomorrow! But even if you are a family of empty nesters, or no children etc. this is an exhibition not to be missed!
I also think the sponsors deserve a mention cos this is groundbreaking stuff:
